The American Cancer Society is proud to announce that University of Maryland, Baltimore and Bruce E. Jarrell, MD, FACP, President will be honored at the 2026 Evening of Hope on Thursday, November 5, in recognition of their longstanding support of the American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge Baltimore. Since 1987, UMB has leased property on its campus on West Lexington Street for just $1 a year to house the free Hope Lodge that has provided a no-cost home-away-from home for thousands of cancer patients who travel long distance to Baltimore for the best possible cancer treatment. Hope Lodge eliminates financial barriers to care so that cancer patients can focus on their treatment and getting better.
UMB’s generosity is a crucial part of the newly expanded, reimagined 34-guestroom Hope Lodge at 635 W. Lexington Street that offers 3,000 more free nights of lodging than the old 26-guestroom Hope Lodge at 636 W. Lexington Street, which provided over 12,000 nights of lodging last year at savings of $1.5 million. The new Hope Lodge, with 30% more capacity, has the potential to provide $2.7M a year in free lodging.
An Evening of Hope, a cocktail-style reception, will raise funds for and celebrate our Baltimore Hope Lodge. The evening will boast heavy hors d’oeuvres, live music, silent auction, raffle, exhibits, and more!
American Cancer Society Hope Lodge® communities offer a home away from home for people facing cancer and their caregivers when cancer treatment is far away. Our 30+ Hope Lodge communities provide a free place to stay during treatment so people with cancer can focus on getting better. These communities provide comfortable guest suites with private baths, as well as inviting spaces with all the comforts of home, including a communal kitchen, dining area, laundry rooms, and places to gather or find a quiet respite – all at no cost to guests.
Hope Lodge guests don’t just find a place to stay – they find a community of support and an emotional connection with others facing the same journey.
